The Journey of an International Student: Navigating University Life Abroad

Written by Charlotte Adams

A year ago, I embarked on a transformative journey across the world to commence a new chapter at Loughborough University, leaving the comfort of my home and diving headfirst into the unknown. Today, as I find myself halfway through the first semester of second year, I am profoundly grateful for the experiences and personal growth that have defined this adventure.

From the moment I set foot on campus, I recognised that this journey would be one of exploration and self-discovery. As an international student, I've had the privilege of pursuing a world-class education and immersing myself in a vibrant multicultural environment. However, the path wasn't without its challenges. Choosing a university amidst a global pandemic, coupled with the inability to physically visit campuses, made the decision-making process exceptionally difficult. Ultimately, I was torn between Hawaii and Loughborough, and after much contemplation, I committed to Loughborough. The saying "things happen for a reason" remains a truth I hold dear, as my decision to move here has shaped me into the person I am today.

Life as an international student can be a rollercoaster, filled with feelings of excitement and, at times, profound loneliness. One day, the prospect of studying in a new place and exploring a different culture fills you with excitement, and the next, all you crave is the warmth of your family's presence, wrapped in a blanket watching your favourite TV show. The saying "Home is where your heart is" holds true; I've been fortunate to discover that sense of home both in New Zealand, where my family resides, and here in Loughborough, surrounded by people I love and care about.

My piece of  advice for any international student is to actively get involved. Engage in societies, sports, course groups, and local events. The more you participate, the more people you meet, and the greater your opportunities for involvement become.

Studying at a foreign university opens doors to a world-class education. International students interact with professors and peers from diverse backgrounds, infusing a global perspective into their studies. This fosters critical thinking, creativity, and a broadened worldview. Yet, navigating a different educational system, handling coursework in a second language, and understanding the different grading systems pose initial challenges. However, overcoming these hurdles contributes to the learning experience, refining problem-solving and time management skills.

International students forge enduring connections with peers worldwide. The friendships cultivated during this period often lead to a global network, offering not just emotional support but also prospects for future collaborations, both personally and professionally. Living in a foreign country provides opportunities to explore new places, landscapes, and adventures. Many international students seize the chance to travel, discovering the beauty of their host country and neighbouring regions. These experiences, from trekking through scenic landscapes to savouring local delicacies, enrich their lives with unique memories.

Managing finances independently is a common aspect of an international student's life. Learning to budget, pay bills, and save money becomes a significant skill, preparing students for future financial responsibilities.

The life of an international student at a foreign university is an extraordinary journey filled with growth, adventure, and lifelong friendships. It offers a chance to immerse oneself in a new culture, access world-class education, and cultivate a global perspective. While challenges are inevitable, the rewards are immeasurable. The transformation that occurs during this chapter equips students with the skills and experiences needed to thrive in an interconnected world.

Reflecting on my time here so far, I appreciate the love and support I've received, the quality of education I'm acquiring, and the diverse friendships I've cultivated. Despite the stress, fears, and unexpected challenges, studying abroad has been an overall rewarding experience, one for which I am forever grateful.
